The state of Inglewood today is upbeat and positive. It is cause of celebration for both old and young residents alike, as they witness the inevitable transformation taking place. Thinking of the enormous progress that has taken place over the last few years, I am more appreciative now than ever about my business and what it stands for.
Who knew when I named my publication Inglewood Today nearly 22 years ago, that the phrase would become so relevant? Of course no one could have predicted the Inglewood of today, back then. We certainly were not rocket scientists and the name was not that unique. But we were proud people who believed in Inglewood’s potential, and thus, included the city’s name in our business moniker.
If there was anything that distinguished us from some other companies, it was our willingness to “own” our city. During the 1990s and early 2000s, there were some businesses and residents who were ashamed of Inglewood. They did not want to be associated with a city that was so negatively stereotyped by mainstream media as crime ridden and economically depressed—no matter how exaggerated those claims.
Now that conditions in the city are rapidly improving, it’s okay to belong to Inglewood again. Outsiders—the same ones who once dogged the city—are are eager to know what is going on in Inglewood today.
If you are one of those people who are feeling the pride again, welcome back. There is much to offer you in Inglewood today, in both the city and the city’s official newspaper.
