Inglewood residents and nearby friends had a tasty good time on September 10 at the 4th Annual District 2 Picnic and Chili Cook-Off.  This year’s event included chili submissions from 10 contestants, including District 2 resident and Inglewood Today contributing writer Anne Cheek LaRose.

“We had a great deal of fun.  The chili was sampled by 3 judges from two Inglewood restaurants:  Fiesta Martin and The Serving Spoon, and 7-Eleven at Centinela and Eucalyptus.  7-Eleven (a frequent event sponsor) has been very good to the District 2 community,” LaRose said.

The first place winner was Hugh Monge from District 2.  The second place winner was Inglewood Commissioner Jim Vaughan and Linda Williams came in third.  Winners got trophies and all contestants received certificates for participating.

Organized by District 2 Councilman Alex Padilla and his staff, the 4-hour event at North Park brought the entire city together for great food, a puppet show, snow cone booth and old fashioned sitting around.

Information vendors, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and the African American Eye Institute returned again this year.

Back to the chili…

“There were all kinds of good chili there,” LaRose said.  “There was chicken chili (a white chili), and several red chilies.  One chili was a dry chili rub with pieces of top sirloin.  They were all really, really good.”

She added:  “Some were served with corn bread.  There was chili served the traditional way with onion, cheese and sour cream.  Another one was served with Fritos in the individual Fritos packets.  It was a really interesting presentation.”

LaRose and her cooking partner won second place last year.  No one who competed last year won this time.  LaRose’s entry this year was a recipe from the world famous and now defunct Chasin’s restaurant in Beverly Hills.  The chili recipe is geared toward healthy eating, as both LaRose and her partner are heart patients.

“I have a feeling that most of us will be back next year,” she said.
