A local legend and philanthropist E.J. Jackson has died, just weeks shy of his highly popular Thanksgiving turkey giveaway.

Jackson was the founder of Jackson Limousine Service, one of the top transportation companies in Southern California.  Heavily patronized by A-list celebrities and regular folks, Jackson is the go-to limousine service for concerts, proms, weddings, funerals and other special events.

Family members said he died of a massive heart attack Tuesday night at a local hospital.  Details are still sketchy.

This Thanksgiving marks the 34th year that the E.J. Jackson Foundation will donate turkey dinners with all the trimmings to residents in South Los Angeles.  The tradition began in 1982,

when several seniors approached him about providing food for Thanksgiving. They were not able to afford a turkey on their fixed incomes so he purchased 100 turkeys.

The next year he provided 200 turkeys and the following year 500. Last year, the E.J. Jackson Foundation provided 12,000 complete turkey dinners to seniors, the disabled, veterans, homeless wounded warriors, and people who just need a helping hand to brighten up their holidays.

Every Thanksgiving the annual Jackson Limousine Turkey Dinner Giveaway is something local journalists looked forward to writing about.  It is a warm, fuzzy feel-good story that made the holidays official and speaks to human compassion.  It also gives folks an opportunity to volunteer and give back to their community.

Despite Jackson’s untimely passing, his son Tyron said the giveaway will occur this year as planned. The family has no plans to discontinue—ever.  “That’s what he would want,” Tyron said.

The well known businessman was remembered on Twitter.  One user wrote: “E.J. Jackson!  Your generosity was unparalleled.” Some fondly remember Jackson Limousine Service being there for their wedding and prom. Others expressed gratitude for his commitment to the South L.A. community.

Funeral plans were not available at press time.  To donate or find out more about the turkey giveaway visit www.ejjacksonfoundation.org.

When it comes to giving back to the community, his generosity has no boundaries. It has become his mission to not only give on Thanksgiving, but now all year round.

Of those who received boxes full of groceries at last year’s event, some were homeless, while others disabled, and many struggling to p

Only weeks before his massive annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway, South Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist E.J. Jackson of Jackson Limousine Service has died, the company said Tuesday.

For nearly 34 years, E.J. Jackson and his E.J. Jackson Foundation collected and donatedthousands of baskets of complete turkey dinners to the South Los Angeles community.

"He was just a blessing to us. A kind person who helped everybody in the community, anybody he could," Julita Fuller of South Los Angeles said.

E.J. Jackson died of a heart attack, the company said, but further information wasn't immediately available.

The tradition started more than three decades ago with only 25 people receiving help. In 2015, they gave away about 12,000 baskets, which included turkey, vegetables and flowers.

"People keep asking, 'Is the turkey giveaway going to happen?' Yes it is," Tyron Jackson, E.J. Jackson's son said. "Not just for this year, but for next year and the years to come."

"That's what he would want," Tyron Jackson continued. "This was his heart and soul and we're going to continue to make it go forward."
