LOS ANGELES, CA — Civil rights attorney Faisal Gill has earned the endorsement of Dr. Melina Abdullah in his bid to be Los Angeles’ next city attorney.  Dr. Abdullah is the co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter and the former Chair of the Pan-African Studies Department at Cal State LA.

“There is really no other candidate for any office who’s been in the streets and been as present as Faisal has… It means the world to families that [Faisal is] committed to a justice system that works for Black youth, that works for the Black community and by extension everyone else,” said Dr. Abdullah.  “[Faisal] has my personal endorsement and I’m going to work to make sure [he’s] elected our next City Attorney.”

Dr. Abdullah joins U.S. Congresswoman Karen Bass, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, State Senator Sydney Kamlager and others in supporting Gill’s bid for what many are calling the next phase of the progressive progressive prosecutor battle.

The Los Angeles City Attorney writes every municipal law, advises the Mayor, City Council and all city departments and commissions, defends the city in litigation, brings forth lawsuits on behalf of the people and prosecutes misdemeanor crimes such as domestic violence, drunk driving and vandalism. It is arguably the most powerful position in the City of Los Angeles.

Faisal Gill is a progressive Democrat who is an immigrant, civil rights attorney, husband, and father who lives in Los Angeles. As a civil rights attorney, Faisal has taken on clients who faced discrimination from the federal government, state governments, immigration enforcement, police departments, and their employers. He hopes to bring his perspective as an immigrant and civil rights attorney to the office of LA City Attorney and restore trust and transparency in local government.

Recently, Gill released a new digital ad titled “Progressive Approach.” The ad highlights the failures of L.A.’s approach in criminalizing homelessness as well as his plans to help fix the broken system.

Previously, Gill formally launched his campaign for Los Angeles City Attorney by releasing a video ad titled “Do Better”.

The Los Angeles primary election will be held on June 7, 2022.
