How L.A. is Surviving Through the Madness

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Maya Mackey

It’s been over a week since the greater Los Angeles wildfires have demolished the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods.  Despair and chaos are amuck but Angelenos are pulling together to show the best of themselves in the midst of tragedy.

YMCAs are offering free childcare services and waiving membership fees for people to come, exercise, rest, be in community and find relief. The Southern California Counseling Center is offering four free counseling services to process the trauma and grief of current affairs. Multiple places are offering free food and coffee to first responders and evacuees and some are even offering freebies to all – because this is overwhelming to everyone in the city. Public Health is also a concern and there are hundreds of places serving as donation centers, providing first aid, masks, hygiene and health essentials. All Los Angeles Public Libraries will be offering the recommended  N95 masks while supplies last.

Particularly awe inspiring is Afropunk’s fundraiser to support over 500 families in the Altadena/Pasadena area that lost their homes. At the time of this writing, $10 million has been raised to restore what was lost. We know that the repair process will hardly be equitable, so any targeted efforts to support Black and Brown families that have experienced such devastation is a blessing beyond compare. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by the wildfires.

From donating essentials to volunteering, local support can make a huge difference. Here are some of the organizations offering assistance and resources for fire relief:

For an ongoing list of places offering support and ways to volunteer, you can check instagram daily. There is also a master spreadsheet produced by Mutual Aid Los Angeles that you can use to see where to pick up supplies if you need them or donate supplies if you are able.

It’s incredible to see how swiftly and adeptly L.A. has pulled up for its people but the process of repair is lengthy. Let us all stay motivated to help and heal long after the fires are contained.
