Welcome to Summer 25

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Can you believe 5 months have gone by? We are near the halfway mark of the year, and it’s
been a quietly successful one for Black American entertainers. Beyonce and Kendrick are
arguably having the best year ever, with a long overdue “Album of the Year” Grammy win for
Bey. Kendrick won five awards, including, “Best Rap Song” for Not Like Us. They are both on
record-breaking tours right now.
Director Ryan Coogler’s first original movie, “Sinners” is close to amassing over $340 Million
world wide and a sequel is rumored to be on the drawing board,  The DVD release is coming
July. Seriously, when was the last time you purchased a DVD? Ryan Coogler is bringing back
art that deserves to be archived, and for that we’re grateful. And for giving us two Michael B.
Jordans in one film, we are eternally grateful.
The Queens tour with Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight and Stephanie Mills this spring
was also a major hit, and will resume in September. Late Spring/Pre-Summer is littered with
special dates to look forward to–Father’s Day, Pride Month, Graduation Season, and Juneteenth
all crammed into June.
I love this time of year because it gets people thinking about community, intentionally planning
celebrations and quality time. If you’re ready to be outside, check out some summer highlights
below:
In Inglewood, folks will come together for the Inglewood Music Festival (July 5) and Family Unity
Day at Darby Park (July 26)  Time for the shorts, cool shades and flip flops.
Caffeinated Fridays, a Black-led co-working group meets every Friday at different cafes all over
the city. Come for the coffee, stay for the community. Find out where at https://caffeinated-
fridays.com
The Creative Arts Gallery on Market Street is hosting artist workshops and craft events
throughout August, including a “Sip & Sculpt,” with artist Rasta Asaru. Movies in the park
resume in Inglewood and Downtown L.A., and, of course, Juneteenth festivals will be abundant.
No matter what your vibe is, plug into the city, plug into the community, and rejuvenate your
spirit.  That’s what the summer is for!
