Inglewood’s City of Champions Lions Club: Making a Difference in the Community


 

The City of Champions Lions Club is a community service organization that has been making a difference in the community of Inglewood for many years. Their home base is Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9300 S Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305. Founded by Beverly Moore over 35 years ago. Led by dedicated members such as Janice Kirk and Kojo Antony and more. The Lions Club has a broad reach of offers various programs and events to help those in need. They are creating a pillar of support to help keep our community strong. They are part of the multinational establishment Lions Club international group, working with other for-the-people groups like The Red Cross.

As one of the heads of the Inglewood branch, Janice Kirk and her fellow Lions have been instrumental in the club’s growth. Like everyone in the last two years, the group was also impacted by COVID-19. However, their recovery has been progressing rapidly with members like Janice’s with the passion for her community has inspired many others to get involved and has positively impacted their community. Kirk is known for her leadership skills, dedication, and tireless efforts to improve the lives of those in need and has only started being a member as of April of the last year, in 2022.

The Inglewood Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, a global organization committed to serving communities where their bases are established. The club’s Main focus is assisting those who are blind or visually impaired. They also work to improve the lives of those with disabilities, support youth development programs, provide disaster relief and even donating to cancer research facilities.

One of the unique programs offered by the Inglewood Lions Club is its vision and hearing screenings. The club pays for and provides free screenings to individuals of all ages, helping to identify and treat vision and hearing problems before they become more severe. They also provide eyeglasses and hearing aids to those who cannot afford them. Last year there was a student who needed eyeglasses in elementary and a 9-year-old student was walking around with broken prescription glasses and got a voucher for America’s Best and got them to give her to get brand new prescription eyeglasses. They partnered with organizations, AKA Cluver City chapter, and collected and recycled over 100 gently used prescription glasses. 

In addition to their vision and hearing screenings, the Inglewood Lions Club offers various other programs and events to help those in need. They host an annual food drive to collect donations for local food banks, provide scholarships to needy students, and support families affected by natural disasters. Reaching out and, at times, even paying for whole surgeries and operations fully covered by the organization. With one of their most recent additions being their monthly food distributions right outside Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9300 S Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305 on the second and fourth Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00

If you’re interested in getting involved with the Inglewood Lions Club, there are several ways to do so. First, You can contact them on Facebook or by email or contact Janice Kirk directly. The club is always looking for new members who are dedicated to making a positive impact in their community. The youth are also welcome, starting at 18 and up. Parental permission will be required for those younger than 18.

Those who wish to see them in action can swing by their home base at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9300 S Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305. Or can go and participate in their District contests this month for their students on the 23rd and listen to them speak being held at the Nakaoka center El Camino at 2:00 pm.
