Black Lives Matter Grassroots has issued a statement condemning the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent Palestinian activist and recent graduate of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Khalil was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 8, 2025, at his university-owned apartment in Manhattan.
Khalil played a significant role as a student activist and negotiator during the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University in 2024. These protests culminated in the occupation of Hamilton Hall, leading to a police raid and the arrest of over 100 individuals.
The arrest has sparked widespread criticism from civil rights organizations, free speech advocates, and political figures, who view it as a potential infringement on First Amendment rights. Demonstrations protesting Khalil’s detention have been held in New York City, and an online petition calling for his release has garnered nearly two million signatures.
Black Lives Matter Grassroots stands in solidarity with Mahmoud Khalil, his family, and all those advocating for justice and liberation. The organization calls for his immediate release and urges continued resistance against systems of oppression.
