GOP House Approves Food, Medical Cuts Affecting Millions

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In a sweeping attempt to kick millions of Americans off Medicaid and SNAP, House
Republicans met in the wee hours of Thursday morning, May 22, to vote in favor of
cutting these programs. If approved by the Senate, millions of Americans will lose access
to medical care and groceries paid for by American tax dollars. It is the largest cut to
Medicaid in history.
The bill—named the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” by President Trump–now goes to the
Republican-led Senate for a deciding vote. The devasting cuts would free up money to
provide tax cuts to the very wealthy.
As Mother Jones reports: “The first months of the Trump administration have been
dominated by its authoritarian impulses and corrupt money-grabbing,
from disappearing people to El Salvador to his on-again-off-again trade war to the
president collecting millions through his personal crypto currency. But the bill
Republicans just passed is classic GOP: Cut vital benefits for the poor to line the
pockets of the rich.”
The bill requires Medicaid recipients to work—something that most elderly and disabled
recipients simply cannot do. It also comes up for a vote at a time when the Trump
administration is firing federal workers and dismantling policies that help women,
veterans and people of color—those who disproportionately depend on public
benefits—to obtain equal job and income opportunities.

Work requirements are slated to go into effect by the end of 2026, a few weeks after the
midterm elections, but Democrats are hoping to see Republicans lose their seats if the
bill passes. “This may very well turn out to be the day that Republicans lost control of
the House of because the American people are paying attention. They are smarter than
you think,” Democratic Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries, said.
California Republicans who broke their promises to protect the health care and food
support for poor and working-class Americans include Rep. David Valadao and Rep.
Kent Calvert.

“Donald Trump has always made clear what he thinks of journalists. And it’s plain now
that his administration intends to do everything it can to stop journalists from reporting
things it doesn’t like—which is most things that are true.
We’ll say it loud and clear: At Mother Jones, no one gets to tell us what to publish or not
publish, because no one owns our fiercely independent newsroom.”
