In a momentous recognition of community impact and service, Heads Up Foundation Inc. has
been named the 2025 California Nonprofit of the Year for the 35th Senate District by Senator
Laura Richardson. This prestigious honor was announced earlier this year and formally
presented on May 21, 2025, as part of “California Nonprofits Day,” a statewide initiative that
shines a spotlight on the vital work of nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
Senator Richardson, who assumed office in December 2024, represents the 35th Senate
District—a diverse region that includes Inglewood, Long Beach, and neighboring communities in
the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Recognizing the nonprofit’s unwavering
commitment to serving at-risk youth, she selected Heads Up Foundation Inc. for its remarkable
contributions to local families and children.
Heads Up Foundation Inc., a grassroots nonprofit based in Inglewood, was founded with a
mission to provide educational support and foster community awareness, particularly for at-risk
youth and their families. Led by CEO Subrina Miller, the organization partners with local
schools, businesses, restaurants, and other community groups to “reach back and help
someone,” embodying its motto of extending support to those in need.
“This recognition means so much to us because it validates the hard work of everyone involved
in Heads Up Foundation,” Miller said upon receiving the commendation. “It also underscores the
importance of building strong, supportive communities, especially for our young people who
face so many challenges.”
Over the past decade, the California Nonprofit of the Year program—spearheaded by the
California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) in collaboration with the State Assembly and
Senate Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector—has honored over 1,000 nonprofit
organizations. Each year, state legislators select a nonprofit from their district to highlight the
important role these organizations play in addressing community needs.
Heads Up Foundation Inc.’s work has resonated with residents in Inglewood and surrounding
areas. Social media and local community forums have been abuzz with praise for the nonprofit’s
efforts in providing tutoring, mentorship, and essential resources to youth who might otherwise
fall through the cracks. From after-school programs to holiday food drives and summer
enrichment activities, the organization has grown its outreach steadily, building trust and
visibility across the South Bay.
Local leaders and activists have also noted the broader impact of the nonprofit’s approach.
“Heads Up Foundation is more than just an after-school program. It’s about lifting up entire
families and making sure no child is left behind,” said longtime community advocate Jason
Coles, who has collaborated with the organization on several youth development projects.
The celebration at the state Capitol brought together honorees from across California for a
luncheon on the Capitol Mall, an event officially proclaimed as “California Nonprofits Day.” It
serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the essential role that nonprofits play in meeting
social and economic challenges throughout the state.
Local news outlets have also reported on the significance of this recognition. Inglewood Today,
for example, published a feature highlighting the stories of some of the children who have
benefited from Heads Up Foundation’s work—young people who credit the program with giving
them confidence, stability, and a path forward. Parents have taken to social media to share
testimonials of the difference the organization has made in their children’s lives.
As the nonprofit marks this milestone, Subrina Miller and her team remain focused on the future.
Plans are already underway to expand programming and partnerships to meet growing demand
in Inglewood and neighboring communities. “This award is an incredible honor, but it’s also a
reminder that there’s still much work to do,” Miller said. “We’re committed to continuing this
mission and making sure every child has the opportunity to succeed.”
For residents of the 35th District and beyond, Heads Up Foundation Inc. stands as a beacon of
hope and resilience, proving that dedicated grassroots efforts can make a tangible difference in
the lives of young people and their families. As California’s legislators gather to honor these
community champions, Heads Up Foundation’s story is one of inspiration, collaboration, and the
power of community to uplift and transform lives.
Congratulations to Ms. Miller and each of the other regional honorees.
