In case you missed it, Trump and his administration are rolling back on some of their stern
ideologies and policy promises. In 2016, Donald Trump campaigned on “build the wall”, a
demand to build an impenetrable southern border across California, Arizona and Texas, officially
separating Mexico and the U.S. in an attempt to drastically decrease Illegal Immigration.
Well, Mr. “Build the Wall” let it slip in a press conference on April 7th, that “we need open
borders.” That is verbatim, no edits, no ambiguity. An unnamed reporter asked Trump about the
glaring inconsistencies in what he says versus what others in his administration are saying
when it comes to the tariff controversy.
“There have been some mixed messages from your administration. You’re talking about
negotiations and yet others in your administration are saying that these tariffs are permanent…”
Trump interjected, saying “Well, it could both be true. There can be permanent tariffs and there
can also be negotiations because there are things that we need beyond tariffs. We need open
borders.”
The entire press conference (with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) is up on Youtube,
so you can see for yourself. I remain fascinated at how quickly he forgets his own lies and his
own point of view but alas, there are receipts for his followers to trace. With some of his
supporters already expressing regret for giving him a chance, it baffles me why he would go on
public record and say the exact opposite of what he was campaigning for, but only God knows
what’s in that man’s head.
Trump isn’t the only one changing his tune. Robert F. Kenedy Jr, who is notorious for his
skepticism regarding various vaccines, posted on X, Sunday night, April 6th, that MMR
(measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is the best way to stop the spread of the measles outbreak
and that he would work with the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) to supply
pharmacies and Texas clinics with an adequate amount of vaccinations. What seems to have
changed RFK Jr.’s stance was visiting a family in Texas who recently lost their child to a
measles outbreak.
So why did people fall for this administration’s initial campaign promises? One Reddit user
exclaims that the economy was the key ticket item that drove him to vote for Trump and now he
is terrified for his family and the safety of the nation as Trump has crashed the market and
“literally destroyed 75 years of trust in weeks”, referencing America’s soured relationships with
former allies..
Buzzfeed asked readers to reveal why some of their parents who voted for Trump are
experiencing regret. The answers ran the gamut. Some elder voters had not realized that
Trump played a part in blocking student loan cancellations and are now pissed off that their kids
won’t reach the “American Dream” due to the lifelong debt. Others on Reddit talked about
losing their retirement savings. Alot of anonymous readers reported that their parents are so full
of shame that they are flat out denying that they voted for Donald Trump.
Will the regret, shame and awakening from the illusion and miseducation change the future? It’s
too soon to tell. With midterm elections largely taking place in November of next year and 468
Congressional seats open for re-election, it is imperative that voters do their due diligence.
Look up words and terms you don’t know. Cultivate empathy and understand that the economy
is not the only issue that matters. Your vote affects millions.
Yes, we are all individuals but no one is an island. If you want to live in a society, you must
acknowledge that other people also exist alongside you and try to look out for their best interest
as well as your own. We can do it. If you regret your choice, make it better next time.
