The Eclipse of Rap Beef

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Maya Mackey

Perhaps it was the great solar eclipse. Perhaps it was Mercury Retrograde. But J. Cole let Nas down. Again. At his Dreamville fest on April 7th, J.Cole admitted to a crowd of over 50,000, that the 7 Minute Drill diss he cooked up for Kendrick Lamar on his new EP, Might Delete Later, was “the lamest [mess] I ever done in my…life.”

7 Minute Drill, which debuted just two days prior to Cole’s apology attacked King Kendrick’s body of work, claiming:

Your first … was classic/your last … was tragic/your second [al bum] put … to sleep, but they gassed it. Your third … was massive and that was your prime. I was trailin right behind, and I just now hit mine.”

Strong sparring words for a man who is indeed included in the conversation of greatest rappers of all time: Millennial edition. And the thing is, Jermaine (Cole) could have gotten away with it. Until he reneged. As a fan, I agree, we likely haven’t even witnessed J. Cole at his prime. That’s how great he is. But you can’t boast that while  also tucking in your tail from a battle with the, now undisputed G.O.A.T. of the 2010s-2020s era.

The other notable jabs included in the song were:

Boy, I got here off of bars, not no controversy.

He averagin’ one hard verse like every 30 months or somethin. If he wasn’t dissin, then we wouldn’t be discussing him.

Lord, don’t make me have to smoke… him, But push come to shove, on this mic, I will humble him.

That’s cute and all except, also in his apology, he encouraged the crowd to agree that KDot is the one of the greatest to ever do this rapping game. He admitted he loved Kendrick (which we already knew) and he even extended his chin for Kendrick to “get [his] best shot on,” saying he’s prepared for Kendrick to go even harder and that as a man, he’ll live with this..

Nobody (who has all of their mental faculties anyway) would deny Cole is a beast on the mic but the GREATEST, EVER don’t back down from battle. Kobe never watered down his play against Lebron. Muhammad Ali didn’t care who he was “brothers” with. In the ring, it was attack or be attacked, no apologies.

While some J.Cole fans have taken the kumbaya route, applauding him for his “maturity,” others of us, are going to question his credibility on any further bars claiming he’ll “murder” any rappers in the game.

The bizarrest thing of it all, however, is that we all knew there was no real beef between Kendrick and J. Cole. The Cold War has always been between Drake and Kendrick. Now if only the Canadian would get in the booth so Jermaine could go follow his peace…
