Anyone can be a boss either by being promoted to run a company or becoming an entrepreneur. Being a boss is much easier than being a bawse. A Bawse is a word created by Lilly Singh, which means someone who is the boss of their own life.
Commonly, we view a Bawse as someone who is married with children and has a great career. Michelle Obama calls it “Someone who has it all”.
Lilly Singh created the term because too often “Bosses” struggle to find a work like balance. For women, often the overly ambitious women are single or childless. For men, often the overly ambitious men are rarely home. Thus, the term BAWSE is what we should be aspiring to become. Someone who understands the meaning of life and work while also balancing balance.
Who are some famous Bawses? Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and more are women who have carved out extraordinary careers but have not lost sight of why God made a woman.
Too often in modern day society many women feel as if they must choose between a career and a family. I will never forget when Jada Pinkett Smith said she retired her acting career to be a mom and a wife. Her exact words, “You can’t have two superstars in the family”. Yet somehow JLO, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Queens around the World have managed to make it work.
“It’s not easy” Julia Roberts said at Michelle Obama’s women’s conference in Malaysia on December 2, 2019. Michelle Obama responded, “It takes a village to raise a child”. Meaning for a mom to have a successful career she needs help rearing her children. Julia Roberts said she always viewed her mom as Super Woman. One day as an adult Roberts asked her mom, “How were you able to do it all”. Her mom responded, “Day Care”.
Now, that America will soon have a Black woman as Vice President in Kamala Harris, women are going to become even more ambitious, which is great for society.
However, what we cannot lose sight of is being a mom and a wife first. As a society normalizes ambitious women more, it is up to us women to normalize being A BAWSE!
