A message from IUSD Administrator

By Dr. Erika Torres, County Administrator

Dear Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) Staff, Students, Families and Community:

In our continued commitment to serving our community and providing current information, we have some important updates in this week’s message.

Board of Education Member Updates

We want to congratulate Dr. Carliss McGhee for being named Board President and Ms. Turner-Evans as our Vice President. We look forward to working closely with Dr. McGhee and Ms. Turner-Evans to promote the great work happening at IUSD. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to Mr. Brandon Myers who joined the Board of Education Representing Trustee Area 3. In addition, Inglewood Unified School District is currently accepting applications to fill two current board vacancies, representing Trustee Area 1 and Trustee Area 5. The application window closes on January 8, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. For eligibility and application information, click here.

Changes in Hours of Operation

We want to provide you with an update on the changes for hours of operation for our school sites and district offices. Effective Monday, January 4, 2021, temporary hours of operation will be modified to 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We understand the importance of continuity of operations, so we will continue to provide the same level of services to our students and IUSD community during the distance learning environment. Please stay connected for the most up-to-date information by visiting our website at www.inglewoodusd.com.

Grab and Go Meal Distribution Update During Winter Break

Our IUSD Food Services team will suspend services through the winter break and food distribution will continue when classes resume on January 4, 2021. There will be NO MEAL DISTRIBUTION from December 21, 2020 through January 1, 2021 at any IUSD school sites.

Our partners in education at Imagine Learning know that maintaining student engagement with a lesson or a digital program can be a challenge sometimes, especially during distance learning. Imagine Learning is running a national reading contest through their Literacy program through January 15, 2021 to help motivate students’ literacy. To participate in the Read-a-Thon contest, please click here for the flyers and start logging your reading in the Imagine Learning Literacy program. Each contest has some really cool prizes for students and teachers. More contests are coming, so GET EXCITED! Good luck to students and teachers!

myON Winter Reading Challenge (K-12 students)

Please join us during the Winter Break as we chill out with a good book. Students are encouraged to read as much as they can on the myON platform between through January 18, 2021. Participating students will have a chance to win gift cards at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Please encourage your student to read 300 minutes or more as there will be 3 names drawn for each of the grade level spans: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. For more information, please find the Winter Reading Challenge flyer here. Happy reading!

Board Member Ms. Alice Grigsby

We want to say farewell to our outgoing Board of Education Member Ms. Alice Grigsby. We want to thank Ms. Grigsby for her dedication and deep commitment to our students and families of the Inglewood Unified School District. She first served as a board member and rejoined our team to serve a vacant seat. Ms. Grigsby’s wealth of knowledge, experience, and perspective contributed to our District in immeasurable ways. Thank you, Ms. Grigsby!

Inglewood Parents Graduate from Parent Engagement Academy

We would like to extend huge congratulations to Inglewood parents from Morningside High School, Woodworth-Monroe TK-8, Bennett-Kew Elementary and Highland Elementary on graduating from the FACTOR Parent Engagement Academy. Parent Engagement Academy’s focus is transforming parents into advocates for their children’s academic development, educational success, and well-being. The seven course program provided parents with the necessary tools to assist their children with social, emotional and physical development, introduce education systems such as STEM, and prepare their children for college. Thank you for representing IUSD and the Inglewood community and being a beacon for parent and student involvement.

Dual Enrollment Opportunity Through El Camino College

El Camino College is now accepting applications for the Winter 2021 and Spring 2021 class sessions. There will be registration assistance sessions students can join to learn more about how to apply and important dates. No RSVP is required to participate!
